AN ENCORE-- The longest running show in Washington just had its run extended. Secretary of Agriculture Ed Schafer told reporters May 8 that President Bush will veto the farm bill fix cobbled together in Congress. The administration believes the farm bill is too costly and fails to deliver needed reforms. House and Senate conferees agreed on a $285 billion farm bill on May 7. The bill could be sent to the White House by the middle of next week.

MARKET MACHINATIONS-- The prospect of a large increase in global wheat production this year could help reduce wheat prices on global markets. Rabobank, a large agricultural lender based in Europe, said wheat crops appear to be in good condition at this stage in the EU and the Black Sea. This could lead to partial recovery in world wheat stocks in 2008, with production forecast to exceed consumption by over 12 million tons. However, the Rabobank report warned: “it is likely to take a number of years of strong production to rebuild world wheat stocks to more traditional levels.

GREEN MACHINE-- The green benefits of hydropower are beginning to be recognized. In a world of global warming, the renewable, clean energy source was featured recently on NBC’s Today Show. It looked at the values of Coulee Dam while also mentioning impacts to tribes and fish. Go to http://today.msnbc.msn.com/id/21134540/vp/24253799#24253799

STRIPE RUST IN EASTERN WASHINGTON-- Spring is taking baby steps coming to the Pacific Northwest and so is rust. Click here for full report.

USDOT NUMBER-- Farms trucks are now required to have a USDOT Number. Apply on-line at www.fmcsa.dot.gov or call (360) 753-0350.
