The Washington Association of Wheat Growers (WAWG) applauds Rep. Dan Newhouse (R-Wash.) for his work as part of the House Agriculture Committee on the reconciliation bill that strengthens the farm safety net and modernizes agricultural policy. These measures will help ensure the continued success and sustainability of wheat farming in Washington and across the nation.
A number of WAWG’s national priorities are included in the reconciliation bill, including an increase in the statutory reference price, increased funding for trade development efforts, and strengthening the crop insurance program.
“We want to recognize Congressman Newhouse’s efforts to make sure our growers have the support they need to continue supplying the nation and the world with top quality wheat,” said Michelle Hennings, WAWG executive director. “The increase in the wheat reference price will more closely match the actual cost of production, giving much-needed support to growers who are struggling to make a profit when prices are low. We are also appreciative of the Congressman’s work to protect crop insurance, making it more affordable for farmers to adequately cover their crops in the face of drought or other natural disasters.”
The reconciliation bill also implements a one-time, voluntary opportunity to add base acres, expands access to conservation programs, and bolsters funding for agricultural research.
“With the unpredictability of farming, a strong safety net is critical,” said Jeff Malone, WAWG president. “Congressman Newhouse recognizes the importance of making sure farmers can afford to put a crop in the ground year after year despite adverse weather, wildfires, and high input costs.”
