Understanding the farm bill

The United States Farm Bill is a massive piece of legislation. It comprises food and farm programs, relating to food security, nutrition, agricultural production, conservation of natural resources, and clean energy. Funding for programs such as crop insurance, crop subsidies, dairy margin coverage, and SNAP are all covered in the Farm Bill. Because of the nature of the bill affecting urban and rural populations, businesses, and programs, the bill is typically bipartisan.

Each farm bill is normally set with an expiration date of five years — enough time for industries and economies to shift, requiring legislative revisions that will respond to changing needs from farmers and communities. Read the rest of the article here.
