Last week, Gil Crosby, vice president of the Washington Association of Wheat Growers and a wheat grower from Spokane County, took part in Washington, D.C., fly-in with the Modern Ag Alliance to emphasize the importance of crop protection tools in agriculture.
“Crop protection tools play a critical role in our ability to raise a crop in an affordable, sustainable manner,” Crosby said. “There’s a lot of public misinformation about how these tools are being used, but farmers aren’t going to use something that is harmful to them, the soil, or their crops.”
The group met with a number of lawmakers and staff, including Sen. Tim Sheehy (R-Mont.); Sen. Steve Daines (R-Mont.); Rep. David Rouzer (R-N.C.); Rep. Doug LaMalfa (R-Calif.); Sen. Angus King (I-Maine); Rep. Ryan Zinke (R-Mont.); Rep. Chuck Edwards (R-N.C.0; and Rep. Dan Newhouse (R-Wash.).
Besides underscoring the importance of crop protection tools, the group also shared concerns about the “Make America Healthy Again” report’s potential impact on agriculture, defending science-based pesticide regulation and asking for support of the Agricultural Labeling Uniformity Act. The proposed bill would standardize pesticide labeling across states, ensuring consistency with the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) scientific findings. It would prevent states from imposing labeling requirements that contradict the EPA’s approved labels and promoting uniformity and stability for farmers and consumers.
